The Process

The first step undertaken in order to create my portraits is the gathering of Nespresso Capsules. Indeed, that requires hundreds and hundreds of them, one can imagine that I had to create a wide network of friends in order to gather them…yes I did not drink them all to myself…

Once I am in possession of them, I have to open them, empty them out, crush them to flatten them and finally sort them out by color for organization purposes. My current portrait consists of about 700 to 1000 capsules.

The longest process of my art has then been undergone and I can start my work as an artist.

Once I am done, they are given to O. Haligon Fine Art Studio where they spray a clear coat, which solidifies the capsules while strengthening their shiny aspect.

About Me

Born in 1961 in Algeria, self-taught painter, Marie Pierre was brought to France following the Algerian Independence. Shortly after, her family decided to depart for the French Guyana, Cayenne, where she was then raised. Upon her return back to France as a young adult, she raised a family of four girls and relocated to Brussels and Miami in the span of these last ten years.

After trying the pastel drawing, she discovered a real passion for oil painting and its technique which allows an endless mix of colors and movements. She, then, explored different techniques and realized she needed more solid materials to create modern art pieces. Her first exhibition in Lille in 2001 was a real success where she introduced a collection based on the desert and Tuareg theme.

Today, her artwork has evolved to a fusion between drawing and sculpture. “Since my arrival in Miami I have been very moved by contemporary art. I had the pleasure of being exposed to new creations and highly admired artists that created artwork based on solid materials such as vinyl, plastic, buttons and others. It got me thinking outside the box. In fact, I have always been inspired by Espresso pods and I have been looking for ways to incorporate them into my creations. It quickly came to me how amazing it would be to choose influential people that still live on today in our minds and represent them through the use of these pods. My artwork is based on playing with colors and contrast with Espresso pods in order to create a new version of timeless pictures. It is a great ecological way of recycling them too! "
